Afternoon rush hour traffic was rerouted for several hours in Miami Gardens Tuesday after a man who police were attempting to arrest barricaded himself in the attic of a home.

The man, identified by neighbors as Franklin Bain, briefly held his daughter, reportedly in her 20s, hostage. He eventually released her when a SWAT team entered the house around 6 p.m., and he was taken into custody “without incident” shortly after that, according to police.

Neighbor Laurie James said Bain fled the house, and police apprehended him.

Neighbors said the standoff began around noon when police tried to arrest the 49-year-old in the Leslie Estates 4 at 20409 NW 27th Court, near Sun Life Stadium. His daughter’s boyfriend had called police to report he was at the home.

During the six-hour ordeal, traffic along Northwest 27th Avenue, between 199th and 203rd streets, was blocked off and a temporary flight restriction was enacted as the Miami-Dade police Special Response Team negotiated with Bain, who was believed to be armed.

Bain reportedly confronted police before darting inside the house.

Neighbors said the SWAT team fired about ten rounds of tear gas into the house.

The warrant for Bain’s arrest states he is wanted for false imprisonment and an armed sexual battery.

Bain is no stranger to the law. Previous charges against him include assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse, battery, and burglary.
