An orchid in a deep forest sends out its fragrance even if no one is around to appreciate it. Likewise, men of noble character hold firm to their high principles,” the great Chinese philosopher Confucius once said. Centuries later, Art Nouveau artist René Lalique found just as much inspiration in the delicate orchid, using it as a favorite motif in his work over the years. For nearly two decades now, Lalique has introduced a new decanter every year, a highly anticipated annual debut that’s become a sought-after object of obsession. The stopper of 2014’s decanter is—what else?—an orchid. An amber-toned, wild and twisted interpretation, it features satin-finish crystal petals. While Confucius wondered if anyone was around to appreciate the orchid’s beauty, we’re certain this one will have quite an adoring audience. $2,950.
