A 3-year-old boxer named Zoey didn’t much like the man strolling past her fence.

He was wearing a pink shirt and sunglasses. She was hanging out in the front yard with two pups.

As Jose Cespedes passed by, Zoey tried to jump the fence several times. She barked. And barked some more.

Cespedes, captured by surveillance video released Friday, continued walking, then reached out to strike the yapping dog as he passed by.

Hialeah police say he had pulled a knife from his waistband.

Zoey’s owner saw the whole thing and came out of the house, 4299 E. Eighth Ln., to confront him. Cespedes then ran off quickly, police said.

Cespedes was arrested Friday. He is being held on $26,000 bond and is charged with cruelty to animal with intent to injure or kill and carrying a concealed deadly weapon.

According to Hialeah police, Cespedes has a criminal past dating back to 1998, including arrests for assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery, grand theft auto and resisting an officer with violence.

Zoey suffered cuts to her shoulder area after the Sept. 13 encounter. She needed surgery and stitches.
