Miami Marlins’ Emilio Bonifacio going back on DL with knee injury

Emilio Bonifacio is headed back to the disabled list.

Emilio Bonifacio is headed back to the disabled list.

The Marlins placed the speedster on the 15-day DL Wednesday with a sprained right knee, which he injured in Tuesday’s victory while making a throw from the outfield.

“Unbelievable,” Bonifacio said. “[Until this year], I’ve never been on the disabled list my whole career.”

Bonifacio will be making his third visit to the DL this season. An injured thumb landed him there the first two times.

Although Bonifacio said he would like to play again this season, manager Ozzie Guillen said it might be more prudent to shut him down and have him healthy for spring training.

“Why, if we’re not going anywhere, why are we going to take a chance on him getting hurt again?” Guillen asked. “It’s up to him. But why risk something that shouldn’t be risked?”

The Marlins called up left-handed reliever Dan Jennings from Triple A New Orleans to fill Bonifacio’s roster spot.

Super solano

Guillen was convinced in spring training that Donovan Solano deserved a spot on the roster. Now that Solano has had a chance to prove himself, Guillen is more convinced than ever.

“He’s been great,” Guillen said.

Solano just missed a club record when he reached base in nine consecutive plate appearances, one shy of the mark shared by Cameron Maybin (2008), Juan Encarnacion (2005) and Derrek Lee (2002).

Solano reached base in his final plate appearance Monday, in all five of his plate appearances Tuesday and in his first three Wednesday. The streak ended in the first game of the doubleheader when he struck out swinging in the eighth inning.

“Next time, I will try to make it [to 10],” Solano said. “I’m focused right now.”
