A Davie man was shot and killed in Liberty City on Tuesday after a confrontation with police in front of a pawn shop.
Miami-Dade police said they went to the shop at 7318 NW Seventh Ave. about 10:30 a.m. as part of an investigation into stolen items from Broward County being pawned there.
When police arrived, they saw their suspect, 40-year-old Charles W. Collins, and asked to see his identification. Collins told them his identification was in his car, police said.
They went to a 2012 Volkswagen GTI, and witnesses said it looked like Collins refused to leave the car when ordered.
“They continued to tell him to get out of the vehicle, get out of the vehicle, and they refused,” witness Tim Brayden told Miami Herald news partner WFOR-CBS 4.
Collins put the car in reverse, police said, and accelerated toward detectives.
A detective opened fire, hitting Collins. He died at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
A woman in the car wasn’t hurt, but was arrested on an unrelated warrant.
The GTI had been reported stolen in Broward.
