The members of the Seminole Tribe of Florida are deeply offended by the brief filed by the government attorneys in United States v. Al Bahlul. To equate the historic struggle of our ancestors in resisting General Andrew Jackson’s unlawful invasion of our homeland to Al Qaeda terrorism is a vicious distortion of well-documented history. We agree with the brief filed by the National Congress of American Indians in the case, which documents that the Government’s strained comparison of Native Americans to Al Qaeda is disrespectful to our Tribe, all American Indians and our American Indian military veterans, as well as those in active military service. We will shortly be sending a letter to the Secretary of Defense demanding that this offensive portion of the Government’s brief be withdrawn. --Jim Shore, General Counsel of the Seminole Tribe of Florida
