  • TROPICAL WEATHER

Ida becomes a Cat 1 and could grow stronger

Hurricane Ida steamed toward the Yucatan Channel on Sunday, a Category 1 storm that could grow stronger, and last longer, than forecasters had expected earlier and bring strong winds and rain to much of Florida by midweek.

  • SEVERE WEATHER

Ida strengthens, expected to become hurricane by Sunday

Fueling on the warm Caribbean Sea, Tropical Storm Ida gained speed and strength and was expected to become a hurricane Saturday night or Sunday morning as it moved north on a path that could threaten Florida Panhandle and other Gulf Coast states by next week.

  • Reformed Ida could have Florida in its sights

A weakened Tropical Depression Ida emerged Friday into hot Caribbean waters and was expected to quickly regain strength as it moves north toward the United States and, possibly, landfall somewhere along Florida's Gulf Coast.
