We left on what I understand to be the last flight of American citizens. (My mother was born in New Orleans.) We actually flew to Mexico on Dec. 26, 1966; then on to Miami the next day.
The attached picture was taken in Havana, Cuba the night before we boarded a freedom flight to Miami in February 1967. I'm the little girl all the way to the right of the picture. I was 10 years old. My mother is standing behind me.
The Gil Family comprised of My father Pedro Gil Camero, Mother Diva Diluvina Garcia Martinez, sister Ana Isela Gil and myself Eloy Gil arrived here in Miami on October 23, 1970.
My family boarded a Pan Am flight on May 17th of 1967. We were 5 members in total: my dad (Lincoln Rodon Odio), my mom (Arline Legra Legra), my brothers (Carlos and Jose Rodon Legra) and me (Lincoln Rodon Legra).
The Rene R. Poveda family came in the 2nd flight on June 14th, 1969 and arrived in Opa Locka Airport. From there they were taken in busses to the Freedom Tower where they were processed and welcomed by family and friends.
As I lived in California at that time, I remember my father telling me about their pending arrival. I recall that early morning when my uncle called us after they arrived. Two days later they were with us in Los Angeles.
Our trip was very stressful because we were coming with my mother, who was very sick and we had the two small children. Because my father had been the Governor of Camagüey we experience a lot of persecution. They had no consideration for us.
Muchos recuerdos que jamas seran olvidados despues de 38 años aunque pasen mucho mas, mi padre fue a playa Giron que para mi el haber visitado el Castillo de el Principe y verlo alli fue una super triste experiencia.
I came to the U.S. on the Freedom Flights on Dec. 7, 1967 and settled up north. Five years or so after arriving, my family and I down to Hollywood, Florida. I went to Cooper City High and in 1974 went to work for the City of Hollywood and retired as an Engineering Inspector in 2005 and moved to Vermont for a while.
