TELEVISION Q&A

Season one leaves 'Hartman' fan wanting more

Akron Beacon Journal

Q: I recently started watching the season one DVD of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, and find it utterly brilliant and hilarious. How many seasons did this show run and are the other seasons available?

A: Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, the satire of soap operas, ran five times a week in syndication from 1975 to 1978 -- a total of 325 episodes, according to The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows. The large cast included Louise Lasser (as Mary), Mary Kay Place, Martin Mull and Dabney Coleman. Unfortunately, the only Hartman DVD to date is a Volume 1 set including the first 25 episodes; a collection of the works of producer Norman Lear included the same episodes.

Q: I would like to know if the Glenn Close series, Damages, is going to return for a third season and if so, when.

A: FX ordered second and third seasons of the drama after the success of the first. Two have aired so far, and a third is due in January 2010. Close, by the way, recently won her second Emmy for playing Patty Hewes on the series.

Q: Can you please find out where the movie Paradise with Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith was filmed? I loved the location and would like to visit that area on vacation.

A: According to the Internet Movie Database, the 1991 movie was made in South Carolina, including Charleston, Georgetown and McClellanville; a Boston Globe article mentioned that ``much of the movie'' takes place in Seabrook Island, S.C.

Q: Some years ago I saw a movie about a Marine and a nun trapped on an island in the South Pacific occupied by the Japanese. I cannot remember the name of either character. I would like to know if it is on DVD.

A: I think you are remembering Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison, with Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr. John Huston directed the 1957 film and co-wrote the screenplay. The script and Kerr's performance were nominated for Oscars. It is on DVD.
