GO & DO

On the Cheap | Plenty of Woodstock celebrations

In case you've been living in a cave these past few weeks, this weekend marks the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. South Florida has plenty of groovy celebrations, and many are free. As for the free love, well, man, like, that's up to you.

Celebrating Woodstock at Cinema Paradiso: Local artists' gallery, organic food and an acoustic jam and drum circle at 2 p.m. Saturday in the courtyard. Bring a guitar, banjo, mandolin, bongos or other instrument. Films inside the theater begin at 4 and include Monterey Pop, A Night at the Family Dog, Festival Express, The Who -- Live at The Isle of Wight Festival and Jimi Hendrix -- Live at Woodstock. In the courtyard, Woodstock begins at 8 p.m., Cinema Paradiso, 503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale; 954-525-3456 or www.fliff.com. The event is free and includes a raffle for free passes to Ang Lee's new film, Taking Woodstock.

Local Kids Rock Out for Woodstock Anniversary: Features kids from the Paul Green School of Rock who will rock out to Woodstock favorites. The event (which is taking place simultaneously with 40 SOR events coast-to-coast) has been endorsed by Woodstock creator Michael Lang and is part of the official 40th Anniversary Woodstock Celebration; 5 p.m. Friday at Weston Town Center, Arvida Parkway and Bonaventure Boulevard, Weston and 5 p.m. Saturday at Peacock Park, 2820 McFarlane Rd., Coconut Grove; free. www.schoolofrock.com.

Woodstock Retro Rock 'n' Roll: Bruce Turkel and his band Blackstar perform classic flashback tunes made famous by Joe Cocker, Jimi Hendrix and others; 7 p.m. Saturday; Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables; free. 305-442-4408 or www.booksandbooks.com.

`Taking Woodstock': A sneak peak of the ``dramedy'' based on the book by Elliot Tiber and Tom Monte and directed by Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain), takes place at 7 p.m. Thursday. Tiber's parents owned a dilapidated motel near Woodstock that became sort of a command central for the concert. Later, Tiber turned up in Greenwich Village and was active in Stonewall, the riot that galvanized the gay movement in the U.S. Tickets are $40 and benefit Gay American Heroes and include a reception for Tiber, who will introduce the film and sign his book. The film, which stars comedian Demetri Martin as Tiber, features songs from '60s icons, including The Grateful Dead, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane and Country Joe and the Fish and will open in Miami later this month; 7 p.m. Thursday at Miami Beach Cinematheque, 512 Espanola Way, Miami Beach; 305-673-4567 or www.mbcinema.com.
