Not into firecrackers, parades or blackened hot dogs from an outdoor grill? We don't call that unAmerican. We call it doing your own thing, which is very American. Thankfully for you, there's plenty else to do this holiday weekend -- and beyond.
Fab Films for Kids: Screening of An American Tail, a family classic about Fievel, a young Russian mouse who is separated from his parents on the way to America. Coral Gables Gallery Night: Stroll or take the city trolley to see works at more than 20 galleries. Three buses and a Coral Gables trolley make stops along Ponce de Leon Boulevard between Southwest Eighth Street and Douglas Road Metro Station in Coral Gables. Highlighting the walk is the opening reception at 7 p.m. of Fuego en el Batey at Cernuda Arte, 3155 Ponce de Leon Blvd. This is the first Florida showing of the 1943 masterpiece by Cuban artist Mario Carreño. The walk is 7-10 p.m. Friday; free, including rides. 305-444-4493.
Beat the Heat on the Fourth at MAM: Beat the Heat on the Fourth at MAM: the literally (gotta protect those masterpieces) and figuratively cool Miami Art Museum is open noon-5 p.m. Saturday, and admission is two-for-the-price-of-one. Still hungry for art? Catch Artsy-Craftsy Grove: Stroll the Promenade at Streets of Mayfair to see works on display and for sale by more than 40 artists 7-11 p.m. Saturday. Live music, a children's arts and craft activity and food and beverage giveaways; 2911 Grand Ave., Coconut Grove; free. 305-726-1466.
Fabulous First Friday at the Miami Science Museum offers a free star show in the planetarium at 7:30 p.m., followed by telescopic observing in the Weintraub Observatory from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The museum is at 3280 S. Miami Ave., Coconut Grove. The star show and observation are free, but if you want to make a family night of it, the museum also has a laser show for children at 7 p.m. for $7 for adults and $4 for kids 3-12. 305-646-4200 or miamisci.org.
Tuesday brings Miami Classic Film Night to Moonchine Asian Bistro-Bar-Lounge. It's a double-bill with Robert Aldrich's campy Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? at 8 p.m. and Hitchcock's opus weirdus The Birds at
10 p.m. Catch the flicks while
