Irish eyes smile on Brickell

IF YOU GO
Waxy's on the River, 690 SW First Ct., Miami; 786-871-7660, www.waxys.com.The Irish have invaded Miami -- specifically the Brickell area, where Brickell Irish Pub was soon followed this summer by Waxy's on the River. The tavern, with siblings in South Beach and Fort Lauderdale, offers ample seating on a waterfront patio with views of the Miami River and the neon-lit Metrorail bridge.
Inside you'll find a warren of carved wood booths, stained glass windows and a 64-foot bar.
Expect pub grub at neighborhood-friendly prices. Most starters are under $10, and salads and mains don't top $14. Beer is $6.75 for draft pints and around $6.50 for exotic bottled brews.
Start off with a platter of smoked salmon with dense dark bread and a side of perky greens. If you're in a tailgating mood, go for conch fritters, chicken wings or potato skins.
There's a thoughtful selection of healthier dishes like a mahi salad with mandarin oranges and a lemon pepper vinaigrette. Mains show a bit more Irish flair with bangers and mash (sausages and mashed potatoes), shepherd's pie and Guinness beef stew.
Irish cream cheesecake, made with the sweet liqueur, is a fitting coda.
