L'Express Sandwicherie, tucked inside The Atrium office building on San Remo Avenue in Coral Gables (just a hop-skip from South Miami), is a worthy discovery -- scrumptious and reasonably priced breakfast and lunch fare, plus free delivery.
Proprietor is Olivier Flamant, 38, a South Florida restaurant vet who was a pro kickboxer in his native France. He consulted for China Grill Management's restaurants at the Delano in South Beach and Center Cut in New York, and once owned Trattoria Luna in Pinecrest.
There are 56 seats, 30 inside the glass-walled space and 26 on the adjacent tree-lined courtyard.
Sandwiches and paninis are prepared on baguettes (traditional or whole wheat) and come with a bag of chips or side salad. Choices include the Cubanito (turkey, ham, mustard, pickles and Swiss cheese) and Sporto (chicken breast with tomato, goat cheese and Cajun mayo with a kick).
Salads are made to order, from Greek and Caesar to the Parisian and Cajun chicken. Check the chalkboard for daily specials such as black bean soup, palomilla with shoestring potatoes, brie-and-ham quiche or lasagna.
Flamant's right hand is Sarah Price, 28, who whips up smoothies like mango madness with honey and milk. She also runs the coffee bar -- espresso and cortadito, cafe con leche and cappuccino. Don't miss Price's homemade desserts -- apple pie, brownies, Rice Krispies treats, coconut macaroons and carrot cake.
A limited breakfast menu, served from 7:30 to 11 a.m. weekdays, includes an egg ''sandwich'' of ham, tomato and provolone on a half-baguette and parfait of yogurt, granola and fruit.
Flamant's helpers deliver to the South Miami business district on a bicycle with a handlebar basket (weather and distance permitting), or by car for larger orders. They'll travel as far as downtown Miami for catering orders for 25 people or more. Voila!
