News from South Florida’s music scene this week includes the return of soprano Elizabeth Caballero, a “rent party” concert by jazz singer Debbie Orta, “Herencia Cubana” with the Florida Chamber Orchestra and a rescheduled Operetta/Zarzuela Showcase.
▪ Cuban-born, Miami-raised soprano Elizabeth Caballero will return to South Florida for a benefit dubbed “Diva-to-Diva” on Oct. 22 at the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, 1 E. Las Olas Blvd. The event celebrates the 90th birthday of celebrated soprano Virginia Zeani, whose contemporaries included Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland. Part of the Up Close and Personal series presented by the Venetian Arts Society and founder/executive director Willie Riddle, the event will begin with wine and hors d’ouvres in the museum’s breezeway at 7 p.m., followed by Caballero’s concert at 8 p.m. The evening will benefit the Broward Health Foundation, the Nova Southeastern University Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research and the Venetian Arts Society.

▪ The Hispanic-American Lyric Theatre is presenting its Operetta/Zarzuela Showcase, postponed when Tropical Storm Erica was threatening, at 3 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium, 2901 W. Flagler St., Miami. The program will include scenes from Naughty Marietta, The New Moon and Giudetta, as well as Louisa Fernanda, El gato montes and La verbena de la paloma. Performers include Mia Rojas, Rebekah Smeltzer, Stephen Fons, Alejandro Viera, Jenna Lorusso, Cristirose Marsicano, Glenda Vega, Fernando Gonzalez, Jesse Vargas, Jennifer Voigt and Selah Oliver. ▪ Jazz singer Debbie Orta performs with pianist Mike Orta, bassist Nicky Orta and drummer Carlomagno Araya at the Miami Jazz Cooperative’s weekly rent party at 8 p.m. Monday. Orta will sing selections from the Great American Songbook, numbers from the ‘60s and ‘70s, and some songs in Spanish and Portugues.
