Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts is planning to kick off the 2015-16 South Florida arts season in style with ArtsLaunch15 on Sept. 12. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. and winding up around 7 p.m., the event (except for some food and drinks) is free to all. The events will take place in various spots at the Ziff Ballet Opera House, the Knight Concert Hall and the Thomson Plaza.
The day begins from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the Ziff Ballet Opera House with ArtsTalk2025, a community cultural conversation moderated by the Knight Foundation that will explore how South Florida arts may evolve over the next 10 years.
A mini comic book convention to celebrate the Arsht’s partnership with the House Theatre of Chicago in The Hammer Trinity (a trilogy opening in April at the Carnival Studio Theater) will take place at the Ziff Ballet Opera House from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a cash prize awarded for the best costume in the Cosplay Contest starting at 3 p.m. For families, Broadway in Miami is sponsoring face painting, coloring and crafts at the Ziff from noon to 4 p.m.
Also at the Ziff, the center’s resident companies — the Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet and the New World Symphony — as well as the Cleveland Orchestra will offer interactive 45-minute workshops from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Acoustical expert Tateo Nakajima will demonstrate the audio capabilities of the Knight Concert Hall at 1:30 and 4 p.m. (an advance reservation sent to email@example.com is required for that), and walking tours of the Knight and the Ziff will take place at noon and 2:30 p.m.
Never miss a local story.
A trio of Miami-based documentaries — Hecho O Mano: Creativity in Exile (3:45 p.m.), Deep City: The Birth of the Miami Sound (4:30 p.m.) and Ayikodans Rise (6:15 p.m.) — will be screened at the Ziff. Also during the event, those seeking part-time work in the arts can visit the Arsht’s job fair at the Ziff from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (bring a résumé).
On the food and drink front, the Arsht’s Farmer’s Market will be on site from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thomson Plaza. The Café at Books & Books and BRAVA!, the center’s two on-site restaurants, will offer free samples from their fall menus from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and BRAVA! has a $20 deal for unlimited mimosas. From 5 to 7 p.m., the Culturists will host a sunset happy hour with drinks, nibbles and music on Thomson Plaza that is free to members, $25 for nonmembers.
The Arsht Center is located at 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. For more information or to request an access pass, call the box office at 305-949-6722 or visit arshtcenter.org.
