Coming up soon in South Florida music and performing arts, choose among a concert version of the musical 110 in the Shade, a jazz “rent party” and the opera Rigoletto.
▪ Palm Beach Dramaworks continues its summer tradition of elaborate concert versions of musicals with 110 in the Shade. The Harvey Schmidt-Tom Jones-N. Richard Nash musical is based on Nash’s beloved 1954 play The Rainmaker, about a lonely young woman beguiled by a con man who promises to bring an end to the drought plaguing her southwestern town. Clive Cholerton is directing the show, which stars Jessica Hershberg as the vulnerable Lizzie, William Parry as her father and Cooper Grodin as the charismatic Starbuck.
Performances are at the Don & Ann Brown Theatre, 201 Clematis St., West Palm Beach, Aug. 14-23 (there’s one preview Aug. 13). Shows are at 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, 7 p.m. Sunday, 2 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday-Sunday. Tickets cost $42. Call 561-514-4042 or visit www.palmbeachdramaworks.org.
▪ The Miami Jazz Co-op is throwing “rent parties” on Mondays all month. Maria Rivas, who is also a visual artist, will sing at 8 p.m. Monday, accompanied by pianist Howard “Jaui” Schneider. Tom McCormick performs Aug. 17, Lisanne Lyons Aug. 24 and James McCoy Aug. 31. The shows are at the Open Stage Club, 2325 Galiano St., Coral Gables.
