Bach Society concert featuring music of Henry Purcell dedicated to former governor

A Miami Bach Society concert dedicated to the memory of former Florida governor Reubin Askew will feature works by 17th century British composer Henry Purcell and his contemporaries.

A Miami Bach Society concert dedicated to the memory of former Florida governor Reubin Askew will feature works by 17th century British composer Henry Purcell and his contemporaries.

Along with his family, Askew, who passed away March 13, supported the Bach Society since its founding in 1984.

Set for 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Coral Gables, the concert is under the direction of the Bach Society’s Donald Oglesby. On the program are chamber and choral music performed by the University of Miami Collegium Musicum, the Miami Bach Society Chamber Players and Indiana’s Echoing Air ensemble under the direction of countertenor Steven Rickards. The previously scheduled Saturday performance of the program has been canceled.

Tickets are $30 ($40 for preferred seating, $5 for college students and New World Symphony Fellows, free to students under 18). The church is located at 5690 N. Kendall Dr. For information, call 305-669-1376 or visit www.miamibachsociety.org.
