Helio: Festivity before the feds

Helio Castroneves didn't look like he had a care in the world Wednesday night at the Keys for a Cause event benefiting the YMCA of Greater Miami at Adrienne Arsht's Brickell manse.

Less than 24 hours later, the IndyCar driver was indicted on multimillion-dollar tax-evasion charges in Miami federal court (see full story on page 1A).

But at the buttoned-up affair, he was busy mingling with philanthropists and munching on gourmet nibbles like salmon tartare, gazpacho and lamb chops.

Castroneves spent part of the evening chatting about ABC's Dancing with the Stars competition, which he won last year. His advice to contestants: Step out of your shell.

''You can't be introverted,'' said the Coral Gables racer, 33. ``You have to find your rhythm and kind of go for it.''

The diminutive Brazilian won the competition with partner Julianne Hough, who's paired with Hannah Montana star Cody Linley this time around.

Of Kim Kardashian, who was voted off Monday: ''That was her problem, I think,'' he said. ``She was too shy.''

The reality star was thrown off on the fifth anniversary of father Robert Kardashian's death and was said to be devastated. Her concentration may have been blown.

''You have to be totally in it,'' he said. ``It is very, very tough. Especially in the beginning.''

OK, so we had to ask: Whom are you rooting for?

''I don't have a favorite just yet,'' he said. ``Maybe Cloris [ Leachman]. We went on a date.''

No, nothing romantic for the Coral Gables bachelor -- who split with his designer fiancée Aliette Vazquez right after nabbing the disco-ball trophy in November.

Castroneves is a guest correspondent for Entertainment Tonight and did a one-on-one interview with the 82-year-old Young Frankenstein star. Air date: TBA.

Bubbly the rest of the evening, Castroneves turned serious when talking about the recent death of fellow race car aficionado Paul Newman.

''He wasn't only an accomplished driver,'' he said, ``but an incredible, generous person.''

Afterward, he was back to making merry with the glam crowd. Did he know what was awaiting him Thursday? If so, all that TV exposure has made him a really good actor.
