SI swimsuit edition puts Roddick's wife on cover

Model Brooklyn Decker landed the coveted Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover this year.

The 22-year-old wife of tennis star Andy Roddick said being chosen for the cover, on newsstands Tuesday, is "the news of a lifetime."

The cover photo of Decker smiling in a yellow bikini is a departure from the more sultry look that SI had gone for the past few years, she said. She compared it to covers from the 1980s or '90s, when Elle Macpherson won her covers with a friendly, sun-loving look.

When Jenni Gordon was a little girl, she loved peeking at the collection of flowing dresses, antique music machines and knick-knacks her father had amassed at their Miami Beach home.

It wasn't until Gordon was older that her father revealed he had been gathering them as a gift to her -- in hopes that in the future she would have her own way to showcase the items.

``He was an avid antique and vintage collector,'' said Gordon, 25, about her dad, who died from heart complications in 2008. ``I've decided to use his gift to me to help others.''

Dishwasher sensors can tell just how dirty your dishes are

The secret to highly efficient dishwashers is electronics.

Sensors can measure the weight of the dishes and the clarity of the water (to determine how dirty the dishes are), then determine how hot the water must be to clean those dishes.

Taking all those variables into account, the average high-efficiency dishwasher uses three to seven gallons of water. Older models use eight to 15 gallons per load, says the California Urban Water Conservation Council.

The glitz and glam along Alton Avenue in South Beach would come later.

When Berta Perez moved into Rebecca Towers 24 years ago, she remembers there were only little stores that sold souvenirs, two garbage dumps and poor people.

That was in 1985, when Perez made her home in Miami Beach's housing project for low-income elderly. She has lived in Victoria Towers, 200 Alton Rd., ever since.
