CELEBRITY HOOKUPS

These couples really made news

A Star reporter who may have had a brief fling with Jon & Kate dad Jon Gosselin abruptly resigned her job Thursday, one day after joining him for a couples-only dinner in the Hamptons. Kate Major went to do a story on the new bachelor ``and ended up falling for him . . . I didn't mean it to happen. It just did.''

Major's not the only one:

Clint Eastwood, 79 & Dina Ruiz, 44: In 1992, post Unforgiven, the then news anchor interviewed the veteran actor/director for the local news at his Carmel, Calif., property. A friendship started, then more -- and marriage. They have one daughter, Morgan.

Awww quote: ``She's a very forthright kind of person. It's one of those things you can't put your finger on because it's pheromones or something.''

Pierce Brosnan, 57 & Keely Shaye Smith, 44: After Brosnan's first wife Cassie died in 1991 the Irish actor said he'd never marry again. He met Smith, a former correspondent for Entertainment Tonight, at a fundraiser for California gray whales three years later. They have two kids.

Awww quote: ``I found a great woman in Keely. Not if I searched a million times over would I find one as good. . . . [and] I love her curves!''

Dan Abrams, 43 & Renee Zellweger, 40: It is unclear how the MSNBC legal correspondent met the New in Town star, but we doubt it was at court. What was the appeal? Zellweger is about as lucky in love as you get, and Abrams has a thing for Hollywood beauties, having dated Law & Order's Elisabeth Rohm and Dexter's Jaime Murray.

Awww quote: N/A. Before they even went public, it fizzled.

Bill Rancic, 38 & Giuliana DePandi, 34: In 2004, the Apprentice (season 1) winner and E! News anchor made googly eyes at each other during an interview for the cable show. They're married now and -- isn't it romantic? -- are getting their own reality series on the Style Network.

Awww quote: ``Not only is Bill the love of my life, but he's also my best friend.''

Suzy Wetlaufer, 50 & Jack Welch, 73: Their love story is now lore. In 2001, Suzy, then editor of the Harvard Business Review, sat down with the former GE legend, who was still married. The chemistry was so thick, she turned off her tape recorder. The rest is, um, infamy (she got fired over the affair). Though the two, wed since 2004, actually seem solid.

Awww quote: ``He's warm. He's funny. He's interesting at every moment.''
