Summer Cabaret Series comes to a jazzy close

Visitors often come to the Deering Estate at Cutler to enjoy canoeing, biking, butterfly hikes, nature guided tours and house tours but you can also stop by for a dose of culture. On Saturday, jazz vocalist Dana Paul performs ''Moments of My Life and A Tribute to Gershwin'' in the historic Stone House built by Chicago industrialist Charles Deering.
This weekend's performance is your last chance to take advantage of the 2008 Summer Cabaret Series at the mansion, which sits on 444 bayfront acres in south Miami-Dade County. The summer's two other Cabaret concerts have sold out, so reserve. Guests can bring their own refreshments and snack.
The Summer Cabaret Concert Series is a great place to enjoy music in an intimate setting, says Leslie Rowe, special events coordinator for the estate.
Each concert begins at 8 p.m., but guests are welcome to arrive at 7 p.m. when the main gate opens. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
If you miss the concert, come back in two weeks for the 7th Annual Wine on Harvest Moon, from 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 13.
The annual wine tasting event features 'fine wine, fine food and fine art' at the estate -- an event ''in the spirit of Charles Deering,'' says Mary Pettit, executive director of the Deering Estate Foundation.
Deering, after all, didn't let Prohibition deter him from collecting fine wine.
He housed an extensive collection of champagne, wine and spirits in a Prohibition Era wine cellar in the basement of the Stone House, she said.
The event will feature Spanish wines presented by Crown Wine and tapas prepared by Miami chefs. Flamenco music will be provided by the Clarita Filgueiras -- Flamenco Puro Dance Company.
The festival's theme ''The Essence of Spain'' represents Deering's love for Spanish art.
The Wine on Harvest Moon event will also include the grand opening of ''Maycel and Taramit,'' a permanent exhibit in the Stone House.
Proceeds will benefit the Deering Estate Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes and supports the estate.
