News and rumors

• Distributor Warner Brothers has announced the release of two beloved 1980s staples, The Goonies and Gremlins, on the Blu-ray format on Oct. 8. The catch? The titles are scheduled to hit stores only in Japan at the moment. But an overseas release date means a U.S. bow can't be too far behind.

• Two of Robert Rodriguez's biggest hits -- Sin City and From Dusk Til Dawn -- will be released on Blu-ray on Oct. 21. No word on extra features yet, but considering how strongly the Disney Co. is supporting the format, you can expect all the supplements from the DVDs to make their way onto the new discs.

The studio has also announced both parts of Quentin Tarantino's blood-soaked Kill Bill will debut Sept. 9, although the unrated cuts of the film, along with Tarantino's long-promised re-edit of the movies into one long, uninterrupted monster, remain MIA.

• Not so welcome is the news that MGM's upcoming Blu-ray discs of Carrie and The Amityville Horror, due Oct. 7, will drop the extensive extras found on their DVD counterparts. The storage capacity of Blu-ray discs dwarfs that of DVDs, so why do studios persist in letting it go unused?
