DVD reviews | Digging around for relics, a missing scientist
New DVD releases due in stores on Tuesday:
The Devil's Tomb (2009): When the scientist (Ron Perlman) in charge of a top-secret Middle East archaeological site suddenly goes missing in this action-packed, apocalyptic thriller, a super-elite military unit led by Captain Mack (Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr.) is drafted to launch a search-and-rescue effort. But Mack and his men don't get far into the cradle of civilization before they are confronted by an ancient, perhaps otherworldly evil lying beneath the desert sand. Tayrn Manning, Ray Winstone and Henry Rollins costar. Extras include alternate scenes, outtakes, commentary and a blooper reel. Sony. $24.96.
Falling Down (1993): Michael Douglas dons nerd's garb and spectacles to play up his role as a feckless modern guy -- a 1990s modern guy, anyway -- who finally snaps under the assault of too much traffic, too much hassle, too much, well, life. The film's premise is fascinating: Douglas abandons his car in a freeway traffic jam and strikes out, cross-country, from Pasadena to Venice, a man on foot in Southern California. But after a while the lines between hero and villain blur too much, and the viewer realizes that Douglas isn't just put upon; he's also that guy who shoots up the neighborhood McDonald's. With Robert Duvall, Barbara Hershey, Tuesday Weld. Extras include commentary by Douglas and director Joel Schumacher. Warner. $12.98, $19.98 deluxe edition, $34.99 Blu-ray.
Forever Strong (2008): Sean Faris, Gary Cole, Penn Badgley, Arielle Kebbel, Sean Astin, Julie Warner and Neal McDonough star in this story based on the life of rugby coach Larry Gelwix, who creates not only championship teams but also championship boys. Gelwix, one of the top high-school coaches in the country with an almost 98 percent win/loss record of 379 to 9, takes local kids from ''both sides of the tracks,'' encourages discipline on and off the field, and requires service, honesty, hard work and dedication from all his players. Extras include deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes featurette, and a motivational presentation on the coach's philosophy of sports and life. Excel. $24.99.
Freezer Burn (2007): Robert Harriell, Michael Consiglio, Ivo Velon, C.C. Seymour, Ella Rae Peck appear in this sci-fi comedy about a scientist who is hard at work preserving human organs for transplant but becomes obsessed with his wife's 14-year-old art student. He decides to use his experimental technology to freeze himself in order to align his age with the girl's, but his plan doesn't exactly turn out the way he had hoped. Vanguard. $19.95.
Lookin' to Get Out (1982): Director Hal Ashby's Las Vegas comedy debuts in a never-before-seen cut that represents his original vision. The new version was recently uncovered with the help of star Jon Voight, Ashby-biographer Nick Dawson and Ashby's daughter, Leigh MacManus, who found that the director had reedited the film after its release, then donated it to the UCLA archives prior to his death in 1988. Interesting fact: Among the cast is Angelina Jolie in her first movie role. Extra: A new interview with Voight and costars Burt Young and Ann-Margret. Warner. $19.98.
New in Town (2009): There's not a single thing novel about the overly familiar plot of this creaky romantic-comedy-fish-out-of-water farce about tightly wound corporate executive Lucy Hill (Renee Zellweger) who finds herself temporarily reassigned from sunny Miami to small-town Minnesota in the dead of winter. Throughout much of the movie, Zellweger's face appears to be immobilized into a frozen mask of misery, which defrosts only after Lucy meets truck-drivin', beer-drinkin', plaid-wearin' hottie Ted (Harry Connick Jr.). But first Ted and Lucy have to act as though they hate each other. That is, until the handsome widower and dad (all together now: awww) happens to have an opportunity to rescue the career-obsessed singleton when her car gets stuck in a blizzard, making her reevaluate her big-city priorities in the face of true love and a near-death experience. The real America, my foot. As Lucy remarks at one point, this whole endeavor looks like the world's coldest theme park. Lionsgate. $29.95, $39.99 Blu-ray.
Powder Blue (2009): Jessica Biel, Ray Liotta, Forest Whitaker and Eddie Redmayne star in this powerful thriller about an exotic dancer, a grieving husband, a terminally ill ex-con and a shy mortician who cross paths as they seek redemption, human connection and restored faith in the gritty underbelly of Los Angeles. What a way to spend a Christmas Eve. Kris Kristofferson, Lisa Kudrow and Patrick Swayze comprise the terrific supporting cast. Image Entertainment. $27.98, $35.98 Blu-ray.
