If you haven't felt sparks yet, just wait until tonight when everyone and their mother attempts to prove their pyrotechnic expertise. Happy July 4, folks. Enjoy it at your own risk. And while for some the party's over as soon as the fireworks finale fades from the sky, for many it continues the entire weekend.
Take Sunday's
Amnesia Tea Dance 10 Year Reunion. Wow, 10 years? We thought it had been 20, frankly, but that said, for those who weren't born yet, who weren't here yet, or who hadn't found a decent ID then, Amnesia was the original club in the space that's now
Opium Garden. This Sunday's reunion from 3-9 p.m. features DJs
David Knapp and
Lazaro Leon, with shows by drag divas
Adora, Daisy Deadpetals and
Shelly Novak, among other unintended, non-headlining drama queens. Advance tickets are being sold at
Halo for $15; they're $20 at the door at Opium. A portion of the proceeds will benefit SAVE Dade's efforts to fight the Marriage Protection Amendment. In addition, dance diva
Aleta will sing live. Shirts not required. If you've never experienced a tea dance, this is not your granny's sweet Lipton, so brace yourself for a wild and raucous time.
From men without shirts to Wine, Women & Song, the new wine seminar at the
Mandarin Oriental's Azul, where, for $40 a person, super sommelier
Cynthia Betancourt will pair wines with tasty tidbits from the Azul kitchen. ''Women are very into wine these days, but I found the local market lacking in intimate, fun, wine events,'' Betancourt said. ''For the Wine, Women & Song program, I wanted each class to stand alone but also to form a great survey of the basics in wine appreciation.'' The first class is on Thursday, titled
How to Navigate a Restaurant's Wine List. Following that, it's
Dessert and Wine on July 24 and
How to Throw a Wine Party Like a Pro on the 31st. If you can't make the classes, check out Azul's Wine Fridays, offered every week at lunchtime featuring $20 bottomless pours of two reds and two whites. What the price doesn't include is a note to your boss explaining that you're too buzzed to return to the office. Eh, live a little!
Or you can live a lot and participate in
Zo's Summer Groove July 9-13. Joining Mourning this year in his fundraising efforts,
Dwyane Wade. This 12th annual weekend of golf, comedy, concerts, dinner and more benefits Alonzo Mourning Charities and the Wade's World Foundation. Headlining Zo's Summer Groove Comedy Show on July 12 at the
Hard Rock Live is
Chris Tucker. For more information on all the festivities, go to
www.zsg.com.
In the meantime, if you're still aimless today, consider the Independance Pool and Beach Party taking place at
The Doubletree Surfcomber Hotel, presented by
Space, Cameo, Park West and
Ultra Music Festival and featuring superstar DJ
Armin Van Buren as the headliner along with a slew of other stellar DJs including
Behrouz, Donald Glaude and
Glenn Morrison and a closing set by
Boris. Party starts at 11 a.m. Friday and goes til 11 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine. Tickets, at $45 or $35 if you get there before 2 p.m., are available at
www.clubspace.com.
If that aural marathon isn't enough, consider the after-party (a misnomer considering the pool party doesn't end until the following night, so we'd call it a mid-party) at Parkwest featuring a Boris marathon Friday but technically Saturday, considering tickets are $20 if you get there before 1 a.m. At
Mansion Friday,
Mya performs her hits
Case of the Ex and
My Life is Like . . Wo. On Saturday at Manse, DJ
Hernan Cattaneo spins house music.
And finally, despite the oppressive heat, it's all about the great outdoors, especially on Thursday night with
Michael Capponi's new weekly cocktail offering at
Plunge, the expansive rooftop at the
Gansevoort. The confab kicked off last week and will continue every week, weather permitting, we guess, but knowing Capponi, he'll figure out a way to make the party happen even during a hurricane.
