Jazid: Live -- and alive -- after 12 years

Some people are impervious to certain things -- and luckily so, especially when there's a recession allegedly looming. Take Jazid, for instance, the live music landmark celebrating its 12th anniversary party this weekend. Pretty impressive in a town where trends and hot spots are as ephemeral as visiting A-listers. And Jazid has one up on many of those, because when stars come there, they usually jam out instead of zone out in some remote VIP room. A few months back, Prince played live with Locos por Juana and the Suenalo Sound System, and we remember years ago, Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins picked up a microphone and rocked out.
According to owner Daniel Wohlstein, ''Jazid has been able to revive live music on the Beach and after 12 years, has still achieved a 10 percent increase in sales compared to 2007.'' Last year, incidentally, was a record year, says the release, ``in a time when more that five different important venues in South Beach closed or were sold for lack of income.''
To celebrate its longevity, Jazid kicks off a weekend of music beginning at 8 p.m. Friday with Locos por Juana and Carlos Bertonatti; and at 8 p.m. Saturday with DJ Le Spam and the Spam Allstars and Suenalo Sound System. ''Jazid is the church of live music,'' said Itagui from Locos por Juana. ''The bottom line is people revisit Jazid again and again. No matter where they are from, the diverse music and unique environment draws them in and keeps them coming back,'' said DJ Le Spam. So mazel tov to Jazid, and here's to at least 12 more years of jamming.
For a little jam -- or aural Vegemite -- from down under, Australia's self professed Dirty South, aka Dragan Roganovic, spins tonight at Set. Tomorrow at Mansion, Josh Gabriel,of Gabriel and Dresden.
Spinning a good deal is Raphael's, 530 Lincoln Rd., which is having a month-long Meat Market promotion in which a special beefy menu including filet mignon, lamb chops, N.Y. strip and more comes with a glass of wine, house salad and dessert. The offer is good through June 30, and for those who don't eat in the summer, the restaurant has live DJs on weekend nights, free WiFi and a daily happy hour from 5-7 p.m.
From the broiler to The Boiler Room, the new so-called private suite, or, as Sounds of Life promoters Hassan Radouane, Laurent Bourgade, Sebastien Custey and Nicholas Clichy have coined it, ''suite for the elite,'' at Dolce, 1501 Ocean Dr. According to Radouane, ''Think Bloomberg meets Playboy Bunnies,'' as far as The Boiler Room is concerned. In addition to being glass-enclosed, the Boiler Room steams, thanks to the ''Smoking hot Davidoff Cigarette girls,'' Radouane says.
While Dolce and its Boiler Room may provide a Willie Wonka variety of eye candy, Cinebistro at the Dolphin Mall one-ups it with a 21-and-older gourmet movie-going experience featuring screening rooms with high-back leather rocking chairs, cocktail tables and a full bar, which would have come in handy during the pain that was the Sex and the City movie. The five theaters accommodate between 60 to 100 people and a dining room seats 60 with an additional 24 on its private outdoor patio. For those who scoff at the outlet mall locale, consider that it was good enough for Philippe Starck, whose gold chairs and bar stools line the place, and for Chicago's award-winning chef Alan Lake, whose menu features crab salad with mango avocado asparagus and hearts of palm; yellowtail snapper sauteed with tequila and lime; and a variety of tapas. For showtimes, menus and ticket information go to www.cobbcinebistro.com. Oh, admission includes free valet parking, too.
And finally, new this week, Aero Bar, opening with a trio of festivities beginning Friday with Shawn Rudnick and Diaga, Saturday with Granite & Phunk and Sandman, and concluding Sunday with Cedric Gervais and Patrick M. While some may scoff at bar prices and cover charges, going to a bar on South Beach these days is a lot cheaper than flying elsewhere to do so. Remember, on South Beach, you're not charged for your personal baggage. Yet.
