BIG SCREEN

Law Abiding Citizen (R) -- An angry man (300's Gerard Butler) targets the Philadelphia prosecutor (Jamie Foxx) who orchestrated a plea bargain for the killer of his wife and daughter. Sometimes, words just aren't enough.

Gomorrah (unrated) -- Director Matteo Garrone's celebrated study of modern-day Italian crime families finally makes it to South Florida.

New York, I Love You (R) -- The producers of Paris, Je T'Aime return with another omnibus of 12 short movies, all love letters to the titular city. Mira Nair, Natalie Portman, Yvan Attal, Faith Akin, Shekhar Kapur and Allen Hughes are among the roster of contributing directors. This one is not nearly as inventive and surprising as Paris was, but former Miamian Brett Ratner's segment is a standout.

The Stepfather (PG-13) -- The trailer for this remake of the 1987 cult classic manages to spoil every single surprise and twist in the span of 90 seconds. Impressive! Penn Badgley stars as a young man who suspects his mother's new boyfriend (Dylan Walsh) may not be who he says he is. As is too often the case with contemporary horror flicks, this one is not being screened in advance for critics.

Where the Wild Things Are (PG) -- Going by the early buzz, director Spike Jonze's adaptation of Maurice Sendak's seminal children's book, based on a screenplay by Jonze and Dave Eggers, is going to be some kind of special. Max Records stars as Max, the lonely boy who becomes the ruler of an island populated by huge, shaggy beasts.

SMALL SCREEN

Starz Inside: Zombiemania (10 p.m. Tuesday, Starz) -- A hilariously berserk documentary on how zombies have infiltrated everything from movies to video games to Jane Austen novels. Not to mention self-defense lectures at which audiences ask questions like, ``What kind of sword is best for decapitating a zombie?''

Frontline: Obama's War (10 p.m. Tuesday, WPBT-PBS 2) -- The White House is considering committing tens of thousands of new troops to the war in Afghanistan, now in its eighth year. Is that a good idea in the land known as ``the graveyard of empires''? A report from the ground.

American Masters: Joan Baez: How Sweet The Sound (8 p.m. Wednesday, WPBT-PBS 2) -- Fifty years of music and lefty politics, told through rare interviews with not only Baez herself but former lover Bob Dylan and ex-husband David Harris.

Nip/Tuck (10 p.m. Wednesday, FX) -- America's raunchiest plastic surgeons begin the sixth and final season of their male-menopausal meltdown doing what they do best: wrecking relationships and mutilating patients.

Sorority Wars (9 p.m. Saturday, Lifetime) -- About what it sounds like, except no naked pillow fights.
