The founding of a nation is the subject of 1776, the lavish Sherman Edwards-Peter Stone musical that kicks off the season at Actors' Playhouse in Coral Gables. Featuring Ken Clement as Benjamin Franklin, David Kelley as Thomas Jefferson and Gary Marachek as John Adams, the 1969 Broadway hit traces the writing of the Declaration of Independence and explores the personalities of the men who dared to break away from British rule. The show previews at 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, opening at 8 p.m. Oct. 3 for a run through Nov. 2. Performances are 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $35 for previews, $48 Friday-Saturday evening, $40 for other shows. Students 18 and younger can reserve in advance for $17.76 tickets (they must be accompanied by an adult paying full price). Actors' Playhouse is at the Miracle Theatre, 280 Miracle Mile.
