Reality star in the house! Outdoor furniture stalwart Brown Jordan recently opened a brick-and-mortar outpost in the Miami Design District. Steve Elton, Brown Jordan’s main design expert, was in town checking out the new digs, mingling with VIPs and providing consultations. We got to chatting with Elton, a frequent Today show guest who has appeared on HGTV’s The Outdoor Room with Jamie Durie and Extreme Homes.
Can you talk about the new store?
The project was designed by Touzet Studio (2015 AIA Miami Center for Architecture & Design Miami Architect of the year) and features a one-of-a-kind living moss wall by Wynwood-based Plant the Future; a collection of photographs by Los Angeles artist Gray Malin; and an unbelievable roof deck with views to the north and south.
What are some common design questions you are fielding lately?
Never miss a local story.
A lot of clients ask for help with space planning and are interested in how and where we source fabric and materials.
What trends are you seeing?
A big one: We’re selling more seating than dining sets. It’s a pendulum effect, and these trends come and go, but at the moment outdoor lounging is more in demand than outdoor dining. In fact, we have four upcoming collections that will be released without dining sets.
How do Miami trends differ from those around the rest of the country?
Miami differs in a few ways. For one, we’ve seen that in Miami we sell more individual pieces. People choose an item to build their design around, like a great chaise for example. Also, because it’s such an international destination, we see more European brands.
What other news do you have?
We have some very exciting upcoming collections, including work with interior designer Michael S. Smith, who was behind the 2010 makeover of the Oval Office.
