The fast track to getting famous these days? Bypass reality TV and become a YouTube all-star. Katy Bellotte, whose motto is “Could be jogging but I’d rather be blogging,” is a case in point. The lifestyle expert, all of 19, was at the University of Miami last week on behalf of the L’Oréal Paris Nutri-Gloss program, which is conducting panels across the country to inspire young people to pursue their passions in social/digital media. Many of the students knew who Bellotte was, which is not surprising: Her YouTube channel HelloKatyxo has more than 400,000 subscribers. She also talked about how to enter L’Oreal Paris' Editor-in-Gloss contest for those who want to advance their aspirations in the beauty, digital and social media industries.
What is a typical day like for you?
I am a morning person so elected for 8 a.m. classes at Eton University in North Carolina. As a full-time blogger and student, it’s often very busy trying balance everything — there are truly not enough hours in the day. I am also the digital fashion editor for my campus magazine, The Edge, and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. As you can probably tell, my sleep schedule is pushed to the back burner.
How did you start?

I’m simply a teenage girl with a video camera who got lucky. I began making my videos when I was 14, before many other people had the sense to do so. I also attribute a lot of my success to my consistency with uploads.
You’re into beauty. What’s your normal routine?
I’m lucky to have hair that dries pin-straight so I don’t have to work too hard at it. If I feel like doing something different or dressing up, I’ll use a curling wand and hairspray to boost my roots.
What is your best tip for gaining a large online presence?
You really have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Talking to a camera or even writing blog posts to an audience who you don’t know and cannot see is no easy task. It’s going to be awkward at first, and that’s OK. You won’t become stellar at it overnight, and that’s also OK. If you believe in the content that you are creating, you allow yourself to have the potential to do some pretty amazing things and touch lives.
