By the time he reaches old age, Collins Key, 19, won’t have much of a bucket list.
The magician has already made it to the finals of America’s Got Talent, toured with Demi Lovato and has his own YouTube channel. It’s OK. You can stop feeling like an underachiever now. Some people just have it, and Collins does. Your chance to see the wunderkind in action comes at 2 p.m. Sunday when the Los Angeles resident performs at the Arsht Center’s second Imagination Ball kid-friendly fundraiser.
How did you get first get started?
My mom started me in the arts when I was 4, performing in a Shakespeare play. When I was 12 I fell in love with the art form of magic and began performing wherever I could. I would walk up to people while they were waiting in line at the grocery store and ask if they wanted to see a trick. I loved being able to connect with people anywhere, anytime.
What is the best part of your job?
Is this a job? It certainly doesn’t feel like one! I absolutely love to entertain and make people smile.
Where do you find inspiration for your magic?
The world around me. I like to tailor my act to pop culture.
You love interacting with your audience and encourage them to live tweet throughout your performance.
Social media is simply one of the best ways to connect with fans. Whether they are with me or halfway around the world I can still connect with the fans one on one.
What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?
Two years ago: My very first audition on America’s Got Talent. That show was an incredible opportunity for me. I got to perform in front of a live audience of 6,000 people at Radio City Music Hall and be watched by millions of TV viewers.
How did you hook up with Demi for her tour?
I had always been a big fan of her music because she is so inspirational and comes from such a genuine place. I crashed her music video set and did some magic for her. After that she asked me to go on tour with her.
Any words of wisdom for someone aspiring to be like you?
Dream big and stay humble. It’s important to stay focused and surround yourself with positive people.
