SO IN LOVE
Is Nicki Minaj engaged or what? The first rule of Celebrity Gossip Club: Question everything. Especially relationships. On Wednesday, Minaj posted a picture on Instagram of a giant heart-shaped ring on that finger with “dope” nail art done by Fort Lauderdale’s Lady Smurf. Minaj’s supposed fiance? Meek Mill, who has a track on her album The Pinkprint. They’ve already inspired a hashtag portmanteau: #Omeeka, based on Minaj’s real name, Onika Maraj. And E! is citing an anonymous source as confirmation that the engagement is indeed real.
I GIVE UP
After living like America’s poor, Gwyneth Paltrow broke her much-mocked attempt at shopping on a food stamp budget in search of some chicken and black licorice.
Never miss a local story.
The multimillionaire mom was derided last week when she accepted the #FoodBankNYCChallenge from celebrity chef Mario Batali. The idea is to experience how difficult it is for families to live on the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), better known as food stamps. So she set out with $29 — the amount the average person receives — and every intention of showing those strapped for cash how to do it. Less than a week later, the famished Iron Man actress gaven up.
“As I suspected, we only made it through about four days, when I personally broke and had some chicken and fresh vegetables (and in full transparency, half a bag of black licorice),” she wrote on her blog, GOOP. “My perspective has been forever altered by how difficult it was to eat wholesome, nutritious food on that budget, even for just a few days — a challenge that 47 million Americans face every day, week, and year.”
In other cute couple news, Tom Brady wrote his supermodel wife a public love letter on Wednesday, after watching Gisele Bundchen walk the final runway of her career at Sao Paulo Fashion Week. “Congratulations Love of my Life. You inspire me every day to be a better person,” Brady wrote on Facebook. “I am so proud of you and everything you have accomplished. ... I have never met someone with more of a will to succeed and determination to overcome any obstacle in the way. You never cease to amaze me.”
Northern Illinois University is offering a course this semester on the HBO series Game of Thrones. The University Honors Program calls the class “Game of Thrones, Television and Medieval History” and students can take it for honors credit, The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reported. The popular show, based on books by George R.R. Martin, is in its fifth season.
Columbia University has not removed TV celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz from his faculty position as a group of top doctors has demanded, citing his “egregious lack of integrity” for promoting what they call “quack treatments.” “Dr. Oz has repeatedly shown disdain for science and for evidence-based medicine,” said a letter the 10 physicians sent to a Columbia dean earlier this week. They say he’s pushing “miracle” weight-loss supplements with no scientific proof that they work.
