ART PICK

'The Endless Renaissance' at the Bass Museum

fsantiago@MiamiHerald.com

In The Endless Renaissance, guest curator Steven Holmes pairs historical works from the Bass Museum of Art Collection with contemporary works on loan from local and national collectors ''to create a dialogue between the past and present.'' You'll see works by masters from the 17th to 18th centuries -- Delacroix, Rubens, Goya, Rigaud and Hoppner -- alongside those of such contemporary artists as Pieter Hugo, Joseph Beuys, Martin Puryear, Wim Delvoye, Charles Ledray, Byron Kim, Jonathan Monk and Eve Sussman. Witness South African Hugo's digital C-print, Abdullahi Mohammed with Mainasara, Ogere-Remo, Nigeria, 2007 (from the Margulies Collection), Hans William Bentinck, Earl of Portland, K.G., 1698-1699 (from the Bass), an oil on canvas by the French Baroque painter Hyacinthe Rigaud. Both works demonstrate the expression of power in the historical portrait.

The Endless Renaissance runs through Aug. 16 at the Bass Museum of Art, 2121 Park Ave., Miami Beach; 305-673-7530; $8 adults, $6 seniors and students with ID. Free for members and children under 6; noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday, but closed July 3; www.bassmuseum.org.
