Cuban artist Félix González Sánchez, known for his humorous depictions of characters in Cuban history and popular culture, on Friday unveils his latest creation -- a 6-foot-tall oil on canvas titled La Babel de Miami. 'A humorous allegory of people and things that are Miami,' the painting features a tower under construction with scores of little people working and parachuting from balloons (some of which bear the colors of flags from around the Americas) as a gathering crowd watches the scene from the ground. González has included a slew of local personalities and archetypes 'here and gone,' plus references to local clichés, political issues and sports teams. People you may know or remember: The twin, look-alike artists Las Hermanas Skull; male and female Every-Rafter characters; Little Havana artists Luis Pardini painting his trademark roosters and Tony López chiseling white plaster. Celia Cruz and Cachao make appearances from the beyond, as does Pope John Paul II.
La Babel de Miami is on view from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday and through July 31 at Obini Art Gallery, 1648 SW Eighth St., Miami; 786-426-7993.
