PAC chairman joining a heady crowd in D.C.

-- Miami Herald Staff

President Obama has appointed Ricky Arriola, chairman of the Performing Arts Center Trust board of directors, to his 25-member President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. Arriola, whose independent board manages the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, will serve with an A-list panel that includes actors Sara Jessica Parker, Edward Norton, Forest Whitaker, Kerry Washington and Alfre Woodard, plus Teresa Heinz Kerry, Victoria Kennedy, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, dancer Damian Woetzel, playwright/director George C. Wolfe, film producer Liz Manne and fashion-publishing legend Anna Wintour.

LITERATURE ONSTAGE

As every year, Prometeo Theatre's professional training program is presenting a literary-themed play during Miami Book Fair International. Chejóv vs. Chejóv, which mixes one-act works by Antón Chekhov with bits of his life story, is directed by Jacqueline Briceño and performed in Spanish with English supertitles.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Sunday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday in Prometeo's theater at Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus, 300 NE Second Ave., Miami. Tickets are $10. Info: 305-237-3262; www.prometeotheatre.com.

DANCERS ONLINE

Miami City Ballet has spun itself headlong online -- with a Facebook page, a blog, a Twitter account -- and it's inviting audiences to chime in. For its Oct. 23 opening night at the Arsht Center, the troupe added a Social Media `Talk Back' to its regular pre-show talks by company director Edward Villella, inviting questions via Tweet, Facebook or (for old-school types) e-mail. Of course, they still have to turn off their smartphones once the curtain goes up.

The idea is already popular on Broadway. However, Miami ballet patrons may not yet have caught on. Comments are supposed to be posted on the MCB Blog page, but, as of Wednesday, not one comment had appeared. There are still a few more chances to make your thoughts heard: MCB's Program I, which includes Company B and Symphony in Three Movements, is at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale on Nov. 6-8 and at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach on Nov. 20-22. GREEN BOOK FAIR

The team color for Miami Book Fair International? Organizers are hoping you will not only part with some green for the sake of literature but also think green for the sake of the Earth. A significant number of authors, including Margaret Atwood (The Year of the Flood), Al Gore (Our Choice: A Plan to Save the Climate Crisis); Olivia Gentile (Life List), Abby Sallenger (Island in a Storm); Jeb Brugmann (Welcome to the Urban Revolution); Ian Shive (The National Parks) and Colin Beavan (No Impact) are pushing books that cover environmental issues.

And the fair also is doing its bit to lighten its environmental footprint. The native plants used to decorate stages and entrances will be put up for adoption at the fair's end. Gore's presentation will be followed by a low-flow shower-head exchange (the first 60 people get the upgrade). Food vendors have been encouraged to use serving products made of paper instead of plastic. And the fair will offer a bike-valet parking service; each cyclist will receive $3 off his entry free.

The fair runs through Nov. 15 at Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus, 300 NE Second Ave., Miami. Info: www.miamibookfair.com.
