SUMMER SERIES
Jazz, classical music on tap in the Gables
Jazz and classical-music fans, take note: The Coral Gables Congregational Church's Summer Concert Series is back for its 24th season.
The series has become a South Florida staple during the summer, when many other performing-arts programs are on hiatus, says Mark Hart, who directs Coral Gables Congregational's Community Arts Program.
At 8 p.m. Thursday, violinist Anne Akiko Meyers will perform selections by Gershwin, Beethoven, Debussy and others in the church's 450-seat sanctuary. Meyers, who played on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson as an 11-year-old, released her latest CD, Smile, in January.
The series continues with singer, pianist and songwriter Tony DeSare July 2; Grammy Award-winning guitarist Sharon Ibsin July 16; the Eldar Djangirov Trio July 30 and trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, brother of Branford and Wynton, Aug. 13.
''It's all music that is of the highest caliber,'' Hart says. ``Once you've come to one, I'm sure you'll be back.''
Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door; 305-448-7421, www.communityartsprogram.org.
