What time is it? Showtime.
OK, not exactly; we still have to wait for it, because there’s no official word on when the Broadway smash “Hamilton” will make it to South Florida. Hopefully before we all die. But budding Aaron Burrs and Lafayettes can audition for the show next week in Miami-Dade.
Winner of 11 Tony Awards, “Hamilton: An American Musical” is holding open auditions for singers who rap Tuesday at Florida International University’s Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center in West Miami-Dade. The casting call seeks men and women in their 20s and 30s for “the non-white roles as written and conceived for the currently running and upcoming productions of ‘Hamilton.’”
That means that while aspiring Angelicas, Elizas and Peggys can take a shot, hopeful King Georges are out of luck. The production won’t be casting ensemble members either.
Never miss a local story.
The casting call adds that “performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are encouraged to attend.” The disclaimer is the result of “Hamilton” coming under fire earlier this year when it sent out a casting call seeking only “non-white actors.” Actors’ Equity said the posting did not reflect its policies and asked for the disclaimer.
In an interview last month, “Hamilton” creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda told the Los Angeles Times that while his “rules” for casting were important, he has no problem relaxing them for high school productions.
“I think keeping kids from art is not something that’s interesting to me,” he said. “Now, regional productions are a whole different thing. When you’re in a professional production it’s like, cast [it] right. Save yourself the headache of everything that comes with a very important conversation about cultural appropriation.”
