Jose's Story

It was an unusually cold late October evening 1961, at Miami airport when I arrived here alone on a KLM flight at the age of 8 from Havana. I was really 10 but my parents were told that I may be too...

José, I just re-read your story. I also remember El Refugio, going to the dentist there and waiting for a doctor's appointment at La Clinica Cubana on Flagler and 12th. Then in my early 20s the Happy Hours at 6 West, 600 Club, Brothers 2, and Big Daddy's. All around the Miami airport because I began working for Eastern Airlines right after high school graduation. Those were the days, my friend!!!

Thank you for your response. There are a few books and doctoral dissertations about our experience. As you know, there were three main Pedro Pan experiences: The Camps. the orphanage/relocations. and those that were supposed to stay with families already in exile. Most of what has been written is about the camp experience-probably because it served the largest number of kids. As a group we have done well, and maintained a heroic, productive, although marked stance in life. be well. PS. of course ,I remember HONEY for THe Bears; Mass a go- go. etc.

Jose, that Halloween story of yours is great. I'm glad your parents got out before they shut the flights.

José, going "trick or treating" without really knowning what that was all about is also one of the vivid memories I have from my orphanage in Buffalo. Also being invited to join their Girls Scouts troop. Seeing the girls in their Scouts uniforms reminded me of the militia in Cuba, so I told the nun I had to call my mom and ask for her permission to join. The nun probably read my mind and told me, "Tell you mom I say it's good--no politics." Right after that I was moved to a foster home, so didn't have to make the Girl Scout decision. Welcome to our network, José!

Estimado Jose: Please, don't forget your Pedro Pan past. As Spanish-born American philosopher and poet George Santayana said: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Please, be a part of the "collective consciousness" and help keep the Pedro Pan Experience alive. Who knows, you might keep others from going through what you now want to forget. Con un caluroso abrazo de un tocayo Pedro Pan, Jose Antonio.
