About Kansas Representative Mario Goico:"In 1959, Castro took control of the government in Cuba. As a result, today I understand the yoke and chains of communism and socialism. After living through very turbulent and oppressive times, I left Cuba in 1961 for Miami, Fl, as part of “Operation Pedro Pan”. Two months later I was sent to Mariana Children’s Home, an orphanage in Wichita, Kansas. The orphanage provided for my care and education until I turned 18.
After the orphanage, I supported myself and paid my way at Wichita State University to earn a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and an MBA in Business Administration and Marketing. In addition, I have completed Air War College, Squadron Commander, Command and Staff, Squadron Officer Schools, and Multinational Program Management at Defense Systems College.
I applied to the Wichita Air National Guard unit and enlisted as an airman in 1970. In 1972 I began my military flying career. I retired from the Air Force Reserve in 2002 as a colonel, after having served 32 years in the Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve. During this period I served as NORAD Director of Mobility Forces, Vice Commander of the 507th Air Refueling Wing, Deputy Commander of the 931st Air Refueling Group (ARG), 18th Air Refueling Squadron Commander and a pilot at the 190th Kansas Air National Guard. I am a “Desert Storm” veteran, having flown 36 missions, and a command pilot with more than 6,000 military flying hours.
In 1974, I began working at Boeing Aircraft Company as an aerodynamics engineer. I retired from Boeing in 2005, having worked as a manager, marketer, engineer and a flight test pilot.
I was elected in 2002 to the Kansas State House of Representatives. I have served as the Chairman of the Joint House and Senate Kansas Security, Chairman of the Military, Veterans and Homeland Security committee, and Vice-chairman of the Elections committee. Other committees in which I have served include: Commerce and Labor, Insurance and Financial Institutions, Tax, Federal and State, Health and Human Services, and Local Government and Elections.
I have received numerous community, military, and leadership awards; including, the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal and twenty one other awards. I received "Leadership Wichita" from the Wichita Chamber of Commerce, and I was also selected by the Air Force as the Air Force Academy Outstanding Additional Duty Liaison Officer for the Nation.
My life experiences have taught me to base my decisions on my love for God, country and family, and the importance of faith, education, and social responsibilities to our community. In the end everything works out for the best, just never give up."
