Beautiful, touching story, Maria. I especially appreciate the feeling of gratitude that is so palpable in many of the sotries I have read here, and that you express so well. Your husband is right, this experience has made us stronger. Leaving Cuba so young also openened up tremendous options we would not have had if we had stayed, whether Cuba had changed or not. This doesn't mean we would have readily chosen all the pain we went through. I would have preferred that our people and our island had not gone through this ordeal. But what happened, happened, and it was up to us to make the best of it. I think most of us have. Thanks to our the brave and resourceful generation of our parents.

Dear Maria, I was touched by your story. You are my sister in law and I had never heard this from you. I can imagine the fear at the airport and feeling so alone. Happy that you only had to wait 6 months for Angelo and Maria to come. It must have been hard, you were the same age as Fernan, and I know that was devastating to him. But as he says it molded our personalities and gave us strenght and responsabilites at an early age. Love, Niurka
