Gracias Yoli! -Mary

Yolanda, yours is a very intriguing, sad, happy, and inspiring story, all in one. Thank you for your kind words about my own story. Also, for the compliment about my Spanish. I was lucky to go to a nice school in Cuba, and later I tried to keep my native language in check. I asked my mother about someone by the name of Cardenas that at one time or another I had heard mentioned. But, it was not Conrado, it was Gonzalo de Cardenas. He was a salesman. My 84 year-old father has Alzheimer's, so I could not ask him at this time. Also, my father did not work in El Vedado until his company was confiscated and he was moved to that location. It is interesting and coincidental that the uncle (mentioned in my story) that took us in for a few days when we first arrived in the USA, move to near Columbia, SC (Ridge Spring) around 1970. He has lived there since. His wife passed away just last year. Best wishes. Carlos

Thanks Yolanda, I appreciate the positive comments. By the way, I read your story and we really have to thank our parents for what they did. I have 2 children (they're adults now), and I can't even imagine what our parents went through. It took my mother until I was 40 to actually talk about it.
