Luis T's Story
Arrived at Miami Int'l airport, with my sister, and eventually went to Jacksonville, to live with two uncles.
Somewhere about a year and a half later, I went to Opa Locka. Eventually, the U.S. Gov`t, in their infinite wisdom decided to integrate the Cuban boys into the American population, so I, along with a few other boys were sent to the Holy Family Home, in Marquette, MI. That was at the end of the school year, in 1963, so I had all summer to acquaint myself with the other Cuban boys already there, and the boys that came up with me. I was full of questions about the coming winter, not because I was afraid of it, but because I was looking forward to it. You see, I happen to like cold weather. In 1964, my parents were finally able to leave Cuba, and were relocated to Lansing, MI. There, I went to O'Rafferty HS. At the end of my junior year, my family moved to Battle Creek, MI. During my senior year at Pennfield HS, I met my future wife (she didn't know that then) I went to jr college for a couple of years, so I had a deferment, which I lost, after taking a semester off school, to get married and establish our own household. I was drafted, but decided to enlist in the U.S Army, to enable me to have a bit of a choice of a military career. I ended my stint in active duty as a Huey crewchief. Although I did enjoy the militarylife, but reenlistment did not m the way to go.
