Mercy

Carlos, welcome! Do you still live in Portland, OR? I live in Newberg OR. Maybe we could meet sometime!

I can imagine that for you and most of the other PP's whose time away from their parents extended into years, the telling of your stories is extremely difficult. Every time I read a story or communicate with another Pedro Pan who's parents were absent for a very long time, I have to thank God for the mercy He showed me. My children have always known about my story and to this day they still ask a questions now and then. They love to look at all the old photos I have here, my baby pictures included! My Dad had the forethought of sending a box of pictures to me when I was at St. Patrick's Home in Sacramento so I wouldn't forget them. I think, Carlos, that the more you talk about it the easier it gets to talk about. It's like unloading this terribly heavy load you've carried with you. I can't imagine being away from your parents for 5 years, but I know you're not the only one, and those of us whose parents were able to get out are the real lucky ones. God Bless you - Mary

I don't think you would run into my town it's so small; 5000 people! I live in Pahokee, the hometown of stuttering Mel Tillis, the old country music singer. We are on the southeastern edge of Lake Okeechobee. Pahokee is the only town right on the lake. All the other towns are a little distance from the edge of the lake. Have you ever played in Clewiston or Okeechobee? Clewiston is west of us on the edge of the lake and Okeechobee is to the north east of us. Thanks for the comments on my story. Every time I think of something or another Pedro Pan's story reminds me of something I had forgotten, I go back to it and incorporate it into my story. I think most of the time little details get lost in the telling of a story but I want to preserve as many details as I can so I can pass on to my children as complete a story as I possibly can. Un saludo Pedro Pan - Mary

Hola Carlos! Just read your story, short but sweet, and what you said about what your parents gave you strikes a chord with me. I've always told people that my Dad saved my life, then I explain. I say my Dad, although my Mom was in agreement to send me to the US through the Pedro Pan flights, it was his idea and he was the one who moved mountains to get me here. So I know what you're saying. It sounds like you were here quite a while before your parents came, but they came none the less and you had a home for them. What a kid! Un saludo Pedro Pan - Mary

Hello again, Carlos. You might have seen tht Jose Aquino has given me information about the Calderon family and is transmitting my thoughts to their son. It's good that after all these years I am able to express my gratitude to them for the part they played in my life. I am glad you know the Calderon family. It is obvious that their children carry on the fine legacy of their parents. Thanks for the note, Yolanda
