Emelina C's Story
When I arrived in Miami I was taken to a fence girls camp. I believe was in Homestead. I lived there for a few months with a couple and about 8 to 10 kids in the house were we really only slept there. We had breakfast in a messhall and then went to classes. On the weekends they would bring the boys to visit, I would see my cousins. My sister and my brother-in-law took me out of the camp when they were going to send me to a foster home. From Miami we relocated to Chicago and lived there for a year or two. My parents arrived to the US thru Mexico and they sent me to a boarding school run by my grandmother's sister order(a cuban nun that had been in the US and Mexico for years). I graduated from Jesus and Mary HS in El Paso, TX where I met my husband (the brother of one of my classmates). After graduating from HS I moved again to Chicago where my parents and sister and family were living. I got married to my sweetheart from Cd. Juarez, (a mexican), moved to Mexico DF for a couple of years while he finished school at UNAM. Moved back to El Paso to have my first daughter and have lived in El Paso ever since. I have 3 daughters and I wish I would remember more about the time I spend at the Homestead camp. I can not remember the name of the couple that took care of me for a few months and the other girls that were there with me. Now here in El Paso we have tried to contact the few cubans that live here and I have bonded with 3 new cuban friends that we meet in a monthly basis.
