Elena well I knew bit of your life, episods that you were telling us chatting at nights after business meetings somewhere in Europe, but now that I've read all of this, well, I better understand why you take a flag in the car to be always ready whereever you are, to celebrate the freedom of Cuba, as one day this will happen! Un abrazo Mauro.

Maria Elena... Let your sister Idania know that I am still unable to reply to her from my computer because of Outlook. She asked me if I remembered your grandparents that lived a block away from my house on 3rd Street. Tell her that 3rd street was the playground for all the young kids in the neighborhood where we would play stick ball, ride our bikes and roller skates. Whenever the ball would hit somebody's front door or go on their roof, someone from inside the house would come out and yell at us threatening to call the cops. I have no doubt that I got yelled at by your grandparents many times. Tell her that I knew the family at the corner of 3 y 2 accross from the Chinese grocery store. Their son was about my age and we would go in his father's car, a 1951 Chevy and pretended we were driving. I am sure the 3 of us could sit down and reminisce for a month about our beloved town and all of the happy times we will always treasure. I remember the young thin fellow who drove your school bus but cannot think of his name. Do you remember a young Afro Cuban boy we affectionately called "Cucho" ? Well, he and I were good friends and I remember he would run errands for your school sometimes. Please stay in touch.

Maria Elena.

Maria, Your description of the events that led to your departure from Cuba and sunsequent months and years is very eloquent. Not many of us can describe the events as detailed as you. For some, the inmense hurt keeps them from talking, others suffer from selective amnesia to prevent the hurt kept inside from hurting us even more. I congratulate you for letting all those feelings and memories be known, you have jumped over the biggest stumbling block in our lives. We should keep these memories alive, otherwise...history will repeat itself. As I see the new developments in our neighboring Venezuela, I would not doubt that another wave, this time of 21 century Pedro Pan's may reach our shores. Let us pray to God that these children do not have to suffer the same fate. God bless you

Hi Maria Elena. Let your sister Idania know that I got her message but cannot reply to her since I am not set up on Outlook e-mail. Tell her that, although I knew the Mora family that owned the pharmacy, we were not related. I lived on 2nd St. between 1&3 a block away from "La Estación Agronómica". Right now I have this craving for croquetas de "La Dominica" en la calle once al lado del cine.. and perhaps tomorrow go down to "La Tabernita" en la carretera del Cacahual for some roast pork...Take care.

Maria Elena...I am so glad that you are from Santiago.. on your last message you took me back a happy memory lane by metioning names like La Marquesita where I bought most of the clothes I brought with me on the Pedro Pan trip to Miami... I had lunch at la fonda de Capote several times and anyone who went to the movies at El Centro on 4th street and does not remember Fogote probably slept through the whole thing. Stay in touch sister... I will always welcome the opportunity to share the good memories...

Yolanda
