Lourdes Rodriguez Baizan
Lourdes 's Story
I left Cuba on 7/08/62 and went to live with houseparents Perez-Plana in Florida City. The following month I was given a scholarship to study at Ladywood School in Indianapolis, Indiana. Two other girls, Ana Maria and Miriam also accompanied me, I still maintain a good friendship with Ana Maria. At the school there were other Peter Pan girls. Ladywood School was an expensive boarding high school, we had an academic scholarship and Catholic Charities paid for room and board, during summer the school was closed so we went to CYO camp and were camp counselors. I married Edelberto Cabrera in 1965, he had also been in the Peter Pan program, and moved to Champaign-Urbana, IL were he was attending the University of Illinois. When I had children I asked myself how my parents could let me come to the States by myself, I don't think I could have sent my children to another country. My mother and older brother came to the States in 1966, my father in 1969 and my youngest brother in 1979, he was supposed to have left Cuba right after I did, but after the missile crisis he couldn't leave and he became of military age soon after. Our life has been good in the States, we are now retired and living in Florida after living in Indiana, Illinois, New Mexico, New York and Ohio.
