Rosa Maria's Story

In the airport, my little sister and I walked into the pesera. We were called up to the milicianos and one of them confiscated my china doll for his daughter he said. I remember walking up, turning, and shouting 'say goodbye to abuelo'.The sounds inside the plane were crying, calling out for Mami y Papi and I was one of the loudest cryer. Outside, it was dark.At the airport, we were given a coca cola and gum. Then the van ride; we first stopped at Matecumbe to drop off the boys. We went to Florida City, slept in a queen size bed with other girls. The building was in construction and one wall had yet to be finished.It was very cold. Next, we were moved into the Munoz house and we slept on a catre. I cant remember much, those first two days. All I know is that on the 6th of December, my older sister arrived. We were awaken by a nun who took us to another building and there was my sister. She actually became our mother from the moment she arrived. She was our greatest blessing. She saved and bought us some car coats. I remember the Christmas meal on the 24th, outside on the street. I remember that it snowed for the first time in Homestead and I saw these flakes falling for the first time in my life. I remember the ravioli for dinner often, the bologna sandwiches, a guy that I befriended in the kitchen who used to give me extra apples.I remember the dance at the camp, spying on my sister; the baseball games, the park, even a rodeo. Most of all, I remember the telephone booth, our life line to my parents. We were separated 4 and a half years and everyday of my being here was always with the hope of returning to my home, to my neighborhood, to my school, to my life and to my country. I did my thesis on Operacion Pedro Pan and was able to get my masters. 25 Pedro Pans completed my surveys and made it possible for me to get my degree. I am forever grateful. Please note, I am interested in meeting single Pedro Pans who would seriously consider a long lasting relationship. Any takers?
