BELATED EXPRESSION OF GRATITUTE: I want to take the time to pay tribute and express my deepest gratitude to the Florida City house parents, particularly to the Mora, Bueso, and Villar families, for looking after me with care and devotion, as though they were my own parents, during the 6 months I spent at the camp awaiting the arrival of my father, who upon my departure from Cuba on August 14, 1962, had to go into hiding in Havana and was subsequently smuggled into the Embassy of Uruguay in the trunk of Albertina O’Farrill’s car, at the behest of Polita Grau, to avoid detention by the communists for his participation in Rescate Revolucionario’s clandestine anti-Castro activities. I don’t think my welfare could have been in better hands than in theirs given the circumstances we all faced at the time. Please, join me in expressing belated thanks to all of them.
Fuente: Mario A. Jose Antonio, BSA was an all girls Catholic school, K to 12, that also had boarders. We had a combination of about 6 -7 Cuban girls, and also Mexican girls from well to do families in Mexico who came to complete their high school there, and we also had local American girls who boarded due to family choice. We were very lucky to have been sent there, considering all the other choices that some of the other Pedro Pan kids had to endure. The school is now a high school for at risk youth and a full time daycare center. Hope this helps, Cari
