37,400 reasons why I hate Florida's property insurance system
In theory, property insurance is supposed to offer you protection against losses from unforeseen events. You pay premiums over time, and even though you know you're probably going to shell out more than you reap, it supposedly offers you peace of mind.
Here's been the reality, based on my 10-years as' [...]

Gigi the Lab loses death-penalty appeal
Gigi the dog has lost her death-penalty appeal for fatally biting another dog, but Gigi’s owner has vowed to take the legal fight to the next level: Broward circuit court.
On Monday, Dahlia Walker-Huntington, the county’s special magistrate for animal cases, upheld an investigator’s designation of Gigi as a “dangerous dog” [...]

Florida's attack of the deep-pocketed candidates
Seemingly out of nowhere, two candidates for high office have appeared on our television screens in the last month – one a Republican, one a Democrat.
One wants to be Florida governor, one a U.S. Senator.
Both are wealthy businessmen who have seared their way into recognition through a barrage of ads. [...]

Disconcerting days in dog death court
I'm not a dog owner, but after spending back-to-back days in Broward's doggie death court, I'd be very afraid if I were one.
Broward's one-bite-and-you're-out ordinance for dogs that fatally wound another animal leaves little room for discretion, no matter the circumstances.
And the county's shoddy investigative and administrative procedures basically trample [...]

More on sensible scent bans
When I wrote a column earlier this week sympathetic to the concept of workplace bans on heavy fragrances, I was bracing for a torrent of hate mail.
Something along the lines of "You're such a wimpy, politically correct liberal, how could you support something so stupid like a workplace ban on'" [...]

Hallandale Beach city manager Good on chopping block
The Hallandale Beach city commission is poised to fire longtime city manager Mike Good.
A resolution to be considered at a 7:30 p.m. meeting tonight cites Good's "repeated and ongoing failure to report to work during normal business hours, failure to maintain communication with the city commission and city staff, and'" [...]

Anti-Muslim rhetoric in Pompano: A lesson in religious intolerance
As an agnostic who thinks clergy-led prayer has no business at government meetings, I got a perverse kick out of Muslim cleric Hasan Sabri's invocation on Feb. 9 at Pompano Beach City Hall. There was a packed house that night, myself included, because the commission was debating the city's police [...]

A call to alms -- Walk for cancer, supplies for soldiers
For those in a giving mood, wanted to start the week by letting you know about two opportunities that have come across my inbox -- a charity walk to help a sick 9-year-old girl in Dania Beach on Saturday and a drive for supplies for a local group that sends [...]

Dog's death-sentence appeal set for Wednesday
Will it be the doggie death penalty or a second chance for Gigi, the 9-year-old Lab mix who fatally bit a Yorkie named Bella earlier this month?
The answer comes Wednesday, with a 2:30 p.m. appeal scheduled before hearing officer Dahlia Walker at the west Broward Governmental Center in Plantation.

Even more on IDs and licenses: Best story yet
Wanted to share this story from reader John C. that's my favorite so far showing the hilarious pitfalls of the new ID requirements to renew Florida driver's licenses.
Take it away John...
This past Friday, I had an appointment to renew my Florida DL. I am 42, born at Memorial Hospital in [...]
