Carnival latest company to sue Rolls-Royce

Miami-based Carnival (CCL) claims in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that Rolls-Royce sold it a defective propulsion system for the Cunard Line ship Queen Mary 2.

Carnival seeks more than $100 million in damages from Rolls-Royce.

Carnival becomes the latest company to sue Rolls-Royce over the Mermaid pod propulsion system. Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Celebrity Cruises also have sued for allegedly similar failures of the Mermaid pods on their vessels.

In the Miami federal lawsuit, Carnival claims problems with the Mermaid pods started soon after the Queen Mary 2 was put into operation in early 2004. Rolls-Royce knew about the problems all along and ''deliberately conspired to mislead, deceive and defraud Carnival into believing otherwise,'' Carnival alleges.

''Rolls-Royce rejects the claims made by Carnival and will defend the action,'' a Rolls-Royce spokesman said. He declined to comment further.
