Tax issue hurts Ocean Bio-Chem's earnings jump

Net income at Fort Lauderdale's Ocean Bio-Chem ( OBCI) declined to $601,000, or 8 cents per share, in the third quarter from $665,000 because of a tax issue. Before taxes, earnings rose 46 percent. Sales jumped 18 percent to $8.2 million.

The company, which makes maintenance products for boats, cars, aircraft and other vehicles, said strong sales of products such as antifreeze plus cost controls helped results. Ocean Bio-Chem also is buying nearly 350,000 shares for 80 cents each from an institutional shareholder.
